NYU Brass Studies Program
The Brass Studies specialization at NYU is housed within the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions (MPAP) at the Steinhardt School. NYU’s Brass Studies program offers a modern, comprehensive musical education—balancing elite performance training, scholarly inquiry, entrepreneurial preparation, and liberal arts integration. Its strategic location in New York City also gives students unparalleled access to professional networks, venues, and performers
It offers a diverse suite of programs for aspiring brass musicians:
Bachelor of Music (BM) in Instrumental Performance
Focuses on combining a strong liberal arts foundation with intensive performance training. Students receive one-on-one instruction from accomplished artist faculty and engage in a wide variety of ensemble contexts, including brass choirs, quintets, orchestras, music theater productions, recording sessions, and screen scoring projects.
Master of Music (MM) in Instrumental Performance
Emphasizes both technical mastery and deeper repertoire understanding across music history, theory, and performance practices from the 18th through 21st centuries. The curriculum includes private lessons, music research, electives (e.g., opera, conducting, music psychology), and culminates in a solo master’s recital accompanied by a research project. Students explore entrepreneurial skills such as concert programming, grant writing, and promotional development, and gain exposure to music technology.
Artist Diploma (AD) performance-focused artists, Ideal for advanced students and professionals preparing for a career in performance, this post-master’s artist diploma helps you continue to develop your technique and musicianship.
Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) tracks in Music Performance, provides opportunities for the highest levels of artistry, pedagogy, and research.
